Right in front of the castle lies a wide sandy beach with shallow, turquoise waters — perfect for families with young children. To the west, a pebbled beach with a rocky seabed offers excellent snorkeling opportunities. Just 300 meters to the east, you’ll find the breathtaking Orthi Ammos Beach, known for its dramatic sand dunes and soft, crystal-clear waters.

Despite its beauty, Frangokastello Beach remains relatively undeveloped, offering a more peaceful and authentic experience. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available in some areas, along with local taverns serving fresh seafood and a few small hotels nearby.

A Fortress Steeped in History 

The Frangokastello Fortress, built by the Venetians in the 14th century, dominates the landscape and holds centuries of history. It later served the Ottomans and was the site of heroic Cretan battles for freedom. Outside its walls stands a monument commemorating those who fought and died there.

Myth, Mystery & Natural Beauty

Legend has it that during certain May dawns, ghostly figures — known as the Drosoulites — appear marching along the beach. These are said to be the spirits of Cretan warriors who were never buried after the Battle of Frangokastello.
