Monastery of Gouverneto

Begin your journey with a visit to the Monastery of Gouverneto, one of the oldest monasteries in Crete, built in 1537. Situated on the Akrotiri Peninsula, the monastery resembles a fortress, complete with four corner towers once used for defense against invaders.

The structure features a rectangular fortified wall, with monk cells surrounding the courtyard. At its center stands the main church, adorned with Venetian sculptures and flanked by two smaller chapels. The monastery is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary (Eisodia tis Theotokou), also known as the Lady of the Angels (Kyria ton Angelon).
The monastery holds significant historical value, particularly during the Revolution of 1821, when it suffered extensive destruction and the monks were massacred by Ottoman forces.

Monastery of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity)

Next, explore the impressive Monastery of Agia Triada, also known as the Tzagarolon Monastery. Built in 1612 by the Venetian-Cretan monks Jeremiah and Lavrentios Jagarolon, this monastery is a striking example of Renaissance architecture, with a grand façade featuring Doric columns.

The monastery includes:

  • Three domes

  • A bell tower, added in 1864

  • A historic library and a small museum showcasing icons and religious artifacts

Agia Triada played an important educational role during the 19th century and remains one of the most important religious monuments in Crete. Photography inside is not allowed, and a small entrance fee applies for visitors.

Experience the serene atmosphere, historical depth, and architectural elegance of two of Crete’s most important monastic sites on this unique tour through the Akrotiri peninsula.
