Explore the Natural Beauty of Crete on the Agia Irini Gorge Tour

Located on the western side of the White Mountains, the Agia Irini Gorge begins just south of the village of Agia Irini, at an elevation of approximately 560 meters. This scenic gorge descends all the way to the southern coast of Crete and ends near the seaside village of Sougia, on the shores of the Libyan Sea.

Key Information about the Gorge

  • The hike from the entrance near Agia Irini village to the exit at Oasis Taverna is approximately 7.5 km long with a descent of about 500 meters.

  • It typically takes around 2.5 hours to complete the walk along a well-maintained path.

  • The trail is shaded for much of the route by pine trees, plane trees, and oleander bushes, making it pleasant even during warmer months.

  • After exiting the gorge, the path to Sougia village continues for another 7 km along a quiet road with limited shade.

Practical Details

  • The gorge is open all year, but after heavy rains, parts of the path may become difficult or unsafe due to water levels.

  • During the tourist season (April to October), a small entrance fee of 2 Euros is collected, which helps maintain the trail and facilities.

  • There are several rest areas along the path, some with access to water (though it’s advisable to carry your own supply).

A Rewarding Hike Through Cretan Nature

The trail is easy to follow and crosses the riverbed multiple times as it winds through a landscape rich with vegetation and wildlife. Springtime is especially vibrant, with wildflowers blooming throughout the gorge, followed by the colorful blossoms of oleander in early summer.

The hike concludes in the peaceful coastal village of Sougia, where you can unwind with a swim at its clean, quiet beach and enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the Libyan Sea before heading back.
