Discover the Treasures of Ancient Crete

Join Platanias Taxi Tours and travel through time with a visit to the Ancient Eleutherna Museum, located near Rethymno. This is Crete’s first archaeological site museum, designed in the spirit of other world-renowned museums such as those in Olympia, Delphi, and Vergina—though smaller in size, it offers a deeply enriching experience.

For over 30 years, archaeologists have been excavating the ancient city of Eleutherna, and the museum was created to house and display their remarkable findings.

What Awaits You at the Museum

  • State-of-the-Art Facilities: Equipped with modern laboratories and conservation rooms for restoration, documentation, and study of the artifacts.

  • Purpose-Built Architecture: The museum spans over 1,800 sq.m. and is nestled in a beautiful 13-acre site. Its design resembles an ark rising from the earth, blending with the natural landscape while offering a panoramic view of Mount Ida (Psiloritis).

  • Exhibition Layout: The right wing hosts the ticket office and staff area, while the left wing houses the museum’s main exhibition halls, showcasing the rich history of Eleutherna.

Highlights of the Exhibition

  • The Kore of Eleutherna: One of the museum’s most iconic displays is the statue known as the Eleutherna Kore, which is thought to be related to the famous Lady of Auxerre. These two statues were reunited for the first time during a special exhibition at the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens (2004–2005).

  • Multimedia Presentations: A screen next to the Kore display narrates the fascinating story of the statue’s discovery and the efforts of Professor N. Chr. Stampolidis to trace its origin and historical context.
