Walk on the Pink Sands of Elafonissi

Discover the exotic beauty of Elafonissi Beach with Platanias Taxi Tour Operator. Located on the southwestern tip of Crete, Elafonissi is a natural wonder and one of Europe’s most beautiful beaches. This unique landscape is often separated into two parts by shallow waters, giving the impression of an island within a lagoon.

Designated as a Natura 2000 protected area, Elafonissi is home to rare sand dunes, lilies, and juniper trees. What makes the area truly special are the shallow turquoise waters, fine white-pink sand (tinted by crushed shells), and the enchanting sand islets that appear at low tide.

Near the split of the peninsula, the lagoon-like waters are barely 1 meter deep — perfect for children and safe swimming. The southern side of Elafonissi offers a more natural beach experience without sunbeds or umbrellas, ideal for those seeking tranquility.

Travel Tips

  • The name Elafonissi means “Deer Island,” though no deer roam the area today.

  • In peak season (July & August), the beach attracts over 2,500 visitors daily. For a quieter visit, consider going early in the day or during the shoulder season.

  • Basic facilities like tavernas and limited room rentals are available nearby.

Sights Along the Way

On your route to Elafonissi, don’t miss the impressive Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, perched on a rock with panoramic views. Legend says one of its steps is made of gold — but only the truly faithful can see it.

Just before Elafonissi, you’ll also pass the Agia Sofia Cave, located 285 meters above sea level. Inside, marvel at its high dome, 70-meter-wide interior, and stunning stalactites and stalagmites. Archaeological finds from the Neolithic period, including ancient shells, add a mystical touch to this hidden gem.

Let us take you on a journey through nature, history, and the serene beauty of one of Crete’s most iconic destinations.
