Discover the Natural Beauty of Kournas Lake

Join us on the Kournas Lake Tour and explore a true natural gem of Crete. Lake Kournas is the only natural freshwater lake on the island and is located in a captivating landscape surrounded by mountains and olive groves.

Situated near the village of Kournas, the lake lies 2.5 km southeast of Georgioupolis beach, 43 km east of Chania, and 20 km west of Rethymnon. It was formed by groundwater from the White Mountains, with water emerging from a spring known as Amati (or Mati, meaning “eye”). During summer, the spring is visible above the lake’s surface, while in winter it lies beneath.

A Place of Myths and Natural Wonder

The landscape around the lake is peaceful and idyllic, offering views that range from shimmering reflections to perfect mirrors of the surrounding hills. The lake’s deep green color once inspired the myth that it is bottomless. In reality, its maximum depth is 22.5 meters. A local legend still tells of a nymph who lives within its waters, preserving the lake’s mysterious charm.

Things to Do at Kournas Lake

At Lake Kournas, you can:

  • Rent a pedal boat or canoe and enjoy a peaceful ride across the water

  • Relax on sunbeds and parasols available for rent

  • Dine at traditional tavernas on both sides of the lake, offering drinks and local food

  • Take a leisurely walk along the shore, with wooden benches for resting and enjoying the view

Unlike other tourist spots, Kournas Lake is unspoiled: there are no souvenir shops or hotels, offering a pure, serene experience surrounded by nature.

Wildlife and Natural Habitat

The lake is home to rare aquatic plants and surrounded by lush greenery. The dark color of the water is caused by underwater vegetation. It is also a haven for birds, including moorhens, ducks, herons, and cormorants, making it an excellent spot for birdwatching and photography.

Whether you’re looking to relax, explore, or simply enjoy a peaceful day in nature, Lake Kournas offers a unique experience in the heart of Crete.
