Balos Lagoon

Balos Lagoon, One of the most famous beaches in Crete

5 Μαρτίου, 2026

Balos Lagoon is one of the most spectacular beaches in Crete and one of the most photographed landscapes in the Mediterranean. Located on the north-western coast of the island, near Kissamos, Balos is famous for its turquoise waters, white sand, and shallow lagoon that creates a tropical scenery unlike anywhere else in Greece.

The beach is formed between the Gramvousa peninsula and Cape Tigani, creating a natural lagoon with crystal-clear waters and soft white sand. Because the sea is shallow and calm, Balos is ideal for swimming and relaxing while enjoying the stunning natural beauty that surrounds the area.

The landscape of Balos is unique. The white sand mixed with crushed shells gives the water its bright turquoise color, while the nearby island of Gramvousa, with its Venetian castle on top of the hill, creates an impressive backdrop. Visitors often combine their trip to Balos with a short boat excursion to Gramvousa Island, where they can explore the historic fortress and enjoy breathtaking views of the Cretan Sea.

BALOS

Access to Balos can be done either by boat from Kissamos port or by road followed by a short hike down to the lagoon. Although the walk is not long, the views along the way are spectacular and offer perfect photo opportunities of the famous lagoon from above.

Balos is part of a protected Natura 2000 area, so visitors are encouraged to respect the natural environment and help preserve this incredible landscape.

If you are staying in the Chania or Platanias area, the most comfortable way to visit Balos Lagoon is by private transfer. With Platanias Taxi SUV 7 Seater, you can enjoy a relaxing and safe journey in a spacious vehicle, perfect for families or small groups exploring the natural wonders of western Crete.

A visit to Balos Lagoon is an unforgettable experience and one of the highlights of any trip to Crete.
